World Dance Day “Hundred-Person Dance Presentation” — Fung Hang-mei
Since 2010, the Hong Kong Dance Federation (hereafter referred to as the “Federation”) has supported World Dance Day, formerly known as International Dance Day, an initiative of the International Dance Council under UNESCO-CID. Dance activities have been organised around 29 April each year. In view of the declining number of people in Hong Kong who dance folk dances, the Federation began making the “Hundred-Person Dance Presentation” a key feature of World Dance Day in 2016. The aim was to promote folk dancing and help line-dance enthusiasts gain a better understanding of folk dances.
When I choreographed the first hundred-person dance in 2016, the response was overwhelming. I therefore made a bold attempt to select five folk dances based mainly on circular formations—one each from Bulgaria, Israel, Romania, Ukraine and Poland—along with a Colombian line dance and a Hong Kong dance. Unfortunately, because we lacked a large venue for rehearsals, many participants were unable to fully grasp the basic steps, handholds and movement positions of the five dances. As a result, the presentation was somewhat chaotic.
Perhaps the choice of dances in the first year was too challenging, and some dancers were discouraged. In 2017, participation dropped from 176 to 112 people. I therefore selected several dances with specific formations that were very familiar to folk-dance enthusiasts, including the Scottish three-couple dance “The Gay Gordons”, the American line dance “Susanna” and the German square dance “Bauernmadl”. In the choreography, I also tried to keep dancers from the same group together so that they could dance more comfortably and naturally. Rehearsals that year progressed much more smoothly. On the day of the presentation, the steps, formations and style were also more organised and unified.
To celebrate the Federation’s fortieth anniversary, the 2018 World Dance Day presentation linked together four categories of dance: Chinese dance, jazz dance, ballet and Western dance. For the Western dance segment, I selected “Ramot”, a work by Israeli dance master Moshiko Halevy, to be performed jointly. This was intended to help folk-dance and line-dance groups develop a better understanding of performance-dance techniques. For four consecutive months, eight dance groups practised enthusiastically. Their unity and perseverance were truly admirable. On the day itself, the outstanding performance by 148 dancers received widespread praise.
In 2019, World Dance Day was held at the newly completed Tsuen Wan Sports Centre, which had two levels and allowed the formations to be filmed clearly. When developing the hundred-person dance that year, I therefore placed greater emphasis on changes in formation. We began with two dances focusing mainly on individual movements: Malaysia’s “Zapin Pekajang” and Taiwan’s Amis “Song of the Ocean of the Harvest Festival”. I hoped these would attract more line-dance enthusiasts to take part in the presentation. We then used the dance “Vesela je Šokadija”, performed by the Šokadija Croats who had migrated to Hungary, to create formations. With lively steps, we formed straight lines, circles and bauhinia-flower patterns. On the day of the performance, seeing 132 dancers give their all and fully express the spirit of the dance deeply moved me. All the effort had been worthwhile.
After the pandemic, World Dance Day resumed as an in-person event in 2024, and the “Hundred-Person Dance Presentation” continued. For me, the first quarter of every year provides an opportunity to rehearse and exchange ideas with friends who love folk dancing, working towards the same goal. It is deeply gratifying to see participants gradually improve without even realising it, to see people from different groups understand and cooperate with one another more closely, and to welcome new friends. I sincerely thank all the teachers and group members who have assisted behind the scenes with filming, drawing and other tasks over the years. I am especially grateful to Mr Lau Siu-ming for his encouragement and advice after each hundred-person dance presentation. He put it beautifully: “Dancing should bring happiness to the people around us.” Perhaps we have not yet truly touched everyone around us, but we sincerely hope that if you love dancing and have time next year, you will come and practise with us. Together, on World Dance Day, let us showcase the colourful folk dances of different places and allow these long-standing cultural treasures to continue to be passed down.

2016 WDD Opening was held by the Hong Kong Dance Federation at Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre, Kowloon, Hong Kong on Sunday, 24 April 2016. 176 folk and line dancers presented a 16-minute suite comprising 7 dances:

2017 WDD Closing was held by the Hong Kong Dance Federation at Hiu Kwong Street Sports Centre, Kowloon, Hong Kong on Sunday, 30 April 2017. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, 112 folk and line dancers presented a 13-minute suite comprising 5 dances:

"Ramot", an Israeli dance with a mixed style of Arabic, Kurdish and Yemenite elements showing the Israelis’ spirit of unity in circle and line choreographed by the renowned Israeli dance teacher Moshiko Halevy, was performed on 29 April 2018 at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre, Hong Kong by 148 dancers from 8 folk dance and line dance groups of Hong Kong for the function World Dance Day 2018 – All Dance As One in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Hong Kong Dance Federation and the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the State of Israel.

The World Dance Day function Let’s Dance Together organized by the Hong Kong Dance Federation took place at Tsuen Wan Sports Centre on 28 April. This year the 100-Person Dance presented by 132 dancers from 10 dance groups included three joyous dances:

World Dance Day 2024 “Let’s Dance Together” presented by the Hong Kong Dance Federation took place at Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre on 28 April.
This year the 100-person dance exhibited included 2 dances. One was Vallja e Pllanës from the village Pllanës of the Lezhë district, northwest of Albania, in which the dancers waved two scarves with brisk steps expressing their joy of freedom; and the other was Shmulik's Medley from Israel, whose music consisted of several melodies, one of which being Hava Nagila, a traditional Israeli folk song meaning “Let us rejoice”.
The 106 dancers were from 10 folk dance and line dance groups, namely Budlet Folk Dance Club, Tak Yuk Dance & Art Association, Vitality Folk Dance Club, Cheung Chi Club, Rainbow Date Society, Crescendo, Crystal Western Folk Dance Troupe, Israeli Dancing Club, Ying Fung Folk Dance Club, and Easy Dance.

World Dance Day 2025 presented by Hong Kong Dance Federation at Tsuen Wan Sports Centre on 27 April.
The 100-Dancer Romanian Dance Exhibition was displayed by 9 folk dance and line dance groups at Tsuen Wan Sports Centre, Hong Kong on 27 April. They included: Budlet Folk Dance Club, Tak Yuk Dance & Art Association, Vitality Folk Dance Club, Cheung Che Club, Israeli Dancing Club, Rainbow Date Society, W.K. Dance Group, Crescendo Charity Club, and Easy Dance.
Description of Dances:
Romania, situated in southeast Europe, is a country in the world which can most preserve its traditional folk dances. Romanian folk dances often have close connections with its geographical environment, people’s lives, customs and ritual ceremonies. Today 108 dancers from 9 folk dance and line dance groups are going to perform five traditional Romanian dances for us. The first three, originating from the south and the northeast of Romania, are related to river, shepherd and weaving. They are: ‘Siriul’ from Muntenia; ‘Ciobănaşul de la Călini’ from Moldavia; and ‘Iţele’ from Oltenia.
The fourth dance ‘Păpuşelele’ meaning ‘Little Dolls’, is a girls’ ritual dance from Dobrogea. Dancers wear masks in front of and at the back of their heads. This connects with the customs which are done before people get married for checking the feelings of the boys, whether they may recognize the girls, and whether they are serious.
The fifth dance is ‘Joc cu sucitoare’, a memorial dance originating from Feleac, a village in Bistriță-Năsăud, Transilvania, Romania. The 9th of March is a day for worshipping ancestors. In the morning women make cakes and put them at the front of the church; they beat sticks and light candles at graveyards. In the afternoon all the villagers dance together. The movements with the sticks denote not only calling for the ancestors but also the kneading of flour and the making of cakes.

Hong Kong Dance Day 2026 -- 100-Dancer Exhibition
Organized by the Hong Kong Dance Federation, Hong Kong Dance Day 2026 took place in different districts of Hong Kong this April to May. The 100-dancer exhibition of western folk dance was staged at Sham Shui Po Sports Centre and Tsuen Wan Sports Centre on 18th and 26th April respectively.
This year the dance suite displayed by the 106 dancers was from Albania. Albanian traditional dances, divided by the Shkumbin River, comprise two major categories: Tosk dances from the south and Gheg dances from the north. While Tosk dances are in chain forms with hand holding, Gheg dances are always solo dances without hand holds. Longing for freedom, the Albanians often dance with up-and-down bounces, wide-opened arms, fully using the space around them to express their feelings.
The two dances that the dancers showed were in relation to flowers: Vallja “Trendafil prej Dimëri” (Winter Rose) from Leskovik in the south, and Vallja “Lulja e Kurbinit” (Flower of Kurbin) from Kurbin in the north. The dancers were from 9 dance groups, namely Budlet Folk Dance Club, Cheung Chi Club, W.K. Group Dance, Vitality Folk Dance Club, Israeli Dancing Club, Rainbow Date Society, Tak Yuk Dance & Art Association, Crescendo, and Easy Dance.
